Water heaters: common questions
How long does a water heater last?
A tank water heater usually lasts somewhere around 8 to 12 years, less with hard water and no maintenance. Tankless units usually last much longer. The serial number on the label usually tells you the year it was made.
Can a leaking water heater tank be repaired?
Not when the water is coming from the tank itself. That usually means the inside of the tank has rusted through, and the fix is a new heater. A leak at a valve, pipe or fitting is different: those are parts and can usually be repaired.
What is the rumbling noise?
Usually sediment: minerals from the water settle on the bottom of the tank and the water trapped under them boils. A flush often helps. On an old tank that has never been flushed, ask the plumber first.
Who can replace a water heater in Florida?
Florida requires plumbing work to be done by a licensed plumbing contractor, and a water-heater replacement generally needs a permit, which the contractor pulls. We match you with a licensed plumbing contractor near you in Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach.
Is this a diagnosis?
No. It’s a starting point built from common rules of thumb. The plumber confirms the cause on site and gives you a free estimate before any work starts.
