Automatic gate opener picker

Tell us the gate type, its length and weight (or material), the slope, how often it opens and whether there’s power at the gate. You’ll get the class of opener that fits, swing vs slide, whether solar will keep up, the accessories to ask for, the safety gear the standard requires, and what to tell the pro.

FAQ

Gate openers: common questions

How do I know what size gate opener I need?

By the length and weight of each leaf, how often the gate opens, and whether the driveway is level. Light residential operators are generally rated for leaves up to about 16 ft and 600 lb, heavy residential up to about 20 ft and 1,000 lb, and anything bigger or an entrance used all day calls for a commercial-duty operator. The operator’s own rating chart is the final word; the gate pro checks it against your gate.

Swing or slide gate?

Swing gates are simpler and cheaper to automate but need room to swing and a level path. A slide gate works on a slope and in tight driveways but needs a straight run beside the drive as long as the gate itself to open into, plus a track or a cantilever frame.

Can a gate opener run on solar?

Yes, at light residential use. A panel and a deep-cycle battery usually keep up with about a dozen opens a day in Florida sun; a busier gate needs a larger panel and battery bank, and a shared or community entrance generally needs AC power. Heavier gates draw more per cycle.

What does UL 325 require?

UL 325 is the safety standard for automatic gate operators. Current editions require monitored entrapment protection, photo-eyes and/or edge sensors, wherever the gate can close on a person, and a new operator will not run until they are connected. ASTM F2200 covers the gate itself: no gaps a child could get through near the operator, no protruding points, and covered rollers on a slide gate.

Do I need a permit for a gate opener in Florida?

It varies by city. Many require an electrical permit for the power run and some a building permit for the gate and posts. Verify with your city’s building department; the pro usually pulls whatever is needed.

Is this a quote?

No. It is a rule-of-thumb pick built from the operator rating charts and the UL 325 safety standard, not a price from USA Home Repairs or any pro. We match you with a vetted local gate pro who measures the gate on site and gives you a free estimate before any work starts.
